Women and Girls In Sports Day

Today is Women and Girls In Sports Day! Are the girls in your life involved in any sports? They should be! Here are some great reasons to encourage your girls to try sports!
1. High school girls involved in sports are less likely than their peers to become pregnant too early!
2. They're also more likely to get good grades in school, and graduate from high school!
3. Girls who spend four hours a week getting exercise are less likely to get breast cancer later on!
4. They're also less likely to get osteoporosis! (older women who get osteoporosis were often not permitted or encouraged to do sports or other physical activities when they were young.)
5. Girls involved in sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem, and lower levels of depression, than their peers. (Very important!)
6. They also tend to have better body images!
7. Girls involved in sports will learn about teamwork and goal-setting, preparing them for productive futures as adults!

Now, maybe I should be the last one talking about this, because I've never been particularly athletic . In fact, gym class was my least favorite class all through school! But girls should know that if they want to get into a sport, they're not limited to basketball and softball! Just about any girl can find a sport she enjoys. Here are some to look into.
Running (either cross-country or track)
Jumping (long jump, high jump, etc)
Gymnastics

These are only a few of the sports I've found! Check here for an even more complete list. When you look over that list, you'll find that there really is a sport for everyone... In fact, you'll probably have to do a little research to find out exactly what some of the sports are and which are best for you. Also, when helping the girls in your life find a sport, remember not to limit them to sports offered at their school! Try the park district, YMCA, Meetup.com, etc, to find others who are involved in the sport the girl in your life wants to try!
And remember, have fun!
