Reading helps Everyone Accomplish Dreams

Today happens to be READ In America Day! (R.E.A.D> stands for Reading helps Everyone Accomplish Dreams!)This is a day created by an organization called Cheer Reading. Ten years ago, a 13-year-old cheerleader named Ashley Anderson noticed that many of her classmates seemed to struggle with reading, and didn't seem to enjoy it at all. She realized that the reason she enjoyed reading was because her parents had read to her a lot when she was a small child. She also realized that she was very fortunate to have grown up in a household where her parents had the time and motivation to sit down and read to her and encourage her to read. Many kids didn't have those things.
Ashley was already a volunteer at a YMCA afterschool program for elementary school children, so she decided to use her volunteer time to do something very special for the kids in the program. She would make reading a really exciting thing for them.
She put on her cheerleading outfit, and created a program where she literally cheered children on for reading.
Now, the program includes many volunteers, mostly in the state of Texas where Ashley is from, but also in other states. Volunteers go to schools, hospitals, libraries, daycare centers, etc, and hold "pep rallies" similar to the ones held in high schools before big sports events... but instead of sports, they are cheering on reading. Next, the volunteers read to the children, and they take a short comprehension quiz. Later, children can even earn prizes by reading!
Anyone can become a Cheereader and help kids get excited about reading. All you have to do to get started is email Ashley at cheereadingprogram@yahoo.com
with your name, address, and phone number. She'll send you a manual with everything you need to get started!
Hey! Lets Read!
